The short answer
Add the PDF, switch on page numbers, and create a new file. Each page gets its number at the bottom, which is useful for assignments, reports and bundled papers that people refer to by page. The original file is not changed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I skip numbering the cover page?
Remove the cover with the page tools, number the rest, and join the cover back with the Merge tool. That keeps it clean.
Will the numbers cover my text?
They sit at the bottom edge in the margin. If your pages have text right at the edge, check a few pages after creating the file.
